__2004-05-25 @ 12:32 a.m._______ Listening to Whiskeytown. I never thought I would like this band- I’ve never liked Uncle Tupelo or really any alt. country in this vain. But Ryan Adams has charm and has that natural instinct that great songwriting requires. I know you’ve heard it before, but truly exceptional pop songwriting is not learned. And that said, I think pop songwriting is in a category of its own for a reason- it works, yes, but it’s also where the songwriter must come up with the magical and mysterious “hook.” I read this quote from the lead singer of a very well respected indie-pop/rock band where he said that prog rock/non-pop structure-rock music was a cop out (for the most part), that staying inside the basic boundaries (and still making interesting pop music) was one of the fundamental challenges of songwriting. I have to agree to a certain extent. Which is funny because there was a time in my life where I honestly would have completely disagreed with a comment like that. I just watched Morrissey on Craig Kilborn. The song was pretty cool, not great, but I could see getting a couple of good listens out of it before it started to get boring. Morrissey is finally starting to look old. It’s official; he’s not a vampire- so I can cross that guy off my list. Don’t get me started on the vampire/famous people thing. Matt just called me from the bar. “Dude, I guess I didn’t expect this to happen- I drank some alcohol and now I’m drunk and in Iowa City. Everyone’s telling me I shouldn’t drive home. Do ya think I can maybe crash at your place?” “Yeah.” “Cool, well get the place ready for me so when I get there we’ll…be like…ready…to ahh, hang and stuff.” “OoooKay. Wait, you do realize that we don’t have anything to sleep on right?” “What!?” “Yeah, we’re moving by the end of the week.” “Really, yeah, we’re moving too. We’re moving to Chicago. That’s a coincidence.” “uhh, yeah.” Note- I don’t think the sarcasm is really translating here- We are both well aware of each of our respective situations…he was just playing stupid. I guess it was much funnier to hear the conversation than to read it. << | >>
